Disco is dead. Has been for some time, but that doesn’t stop me from getting down all the time. Today I stumbled upon a song that appeared almost as if someone had sent it from above. Carl Bean’s “I Was Born This Way” is an unapologetic queer anthem, Bean’s voice soars above the track, joyous and rebellious, proclaiming his homosexuality as both normal and god given. We know that sexuality is not inherently revolutionary but in the context of living in the homophobic society that we inhabit, proclaimations like this strike at the heart of the beast, especially when they come from someone like Bean, who is both queer and Black, a double minority in the Western Wasteland.
Get Into Bean’s anthem. *fun fact* Bean is a founding member of the Unity Fellowship Church. An LGBT ministry in LA
