I was in a conversation with a friend recently and we were talking about Gay Hip Hop (Homohop) and he was upset. He said that it saddened him that the music wasn’t more progressive or revolutionary. I responded “Why would you expect it to be? Because they’re gay?”
Hip Hop is a music of the people, it is an expression of the community and thus the music and artist reflect the mood of the community. If the people are all about dancing and partying then that is the majority of what will be in the majority of the music. I don’t hold gay rappers to a higher standard than I hold myself and the community of queer Blacks. We need to stop waiting on others to be what we want from ourselves.
